Silk oriental rug

A small mistake in cleaning a silk oriental rug can potentially ruin the beauty of the carpet or cost a lot of money to fix. Here are a few tips to keep this from happening to you.

Vacuum

Vacuuming a silk oriental rug is a big and potentially costly mistake. An electric powered vacuum cleaner can cause damage to the delicate fibers in the rug. The beater bar can twist and pull on the knots in the material. If you must use a vacuum on yours try to use only small, hand pushed models. This will help to decrease the amount of damage. You must also be sure to never vacuum the fringe.

Dry Cleaning

Many cleaners advertise the ability to clean all types of rugs. The problem with this is that most cleaners use a chemical process to clean items. The chemicals used in dry cleaning can cause the colors in your silk rug to bleed, the fibers to warp, and can damage the pile on the rug.

Spot Cleaning

Most cleaning solutions will damage your rug, and even water can damage your rug if not used correctly. If you have a spot that needs to be cleaned, mix just a drop of mild detergent (like Dove) and a cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray once on a clean cloth, and then dab at the spot. Do not soak the spot or apply any soap or cleaning material directly to the carpet. If this doesn’t work, have the spot evaluated by a professional.

Machine Washing

If you want to ruin your rug completely, go ahead and throw it in a machine. The agitation from a washing machine will damage the silk fibers in the rug. The water can cause more damage. The hand dyed colors will run and bleed through the rug.
If you need to have your silk oriental rug cleaned, find a professional in your area to do it for you.

Cat and dog

Cat and dog urine stains are smelly and incredibly tough to get out of carpeting or other materials. In many cases, the products sold to eliminate the stains can smell just as bad. And because pets are territorial, if the odor isn’t completely eliminated, the odds are good that they will soil the same location repeatedly. Here’s a safe and effective way to neutralize pet urine so your home will smell and look better.

Step 1 - Wet

Add ½-cup of white vinegar to a quart of warm water. Lightly pour the solution onto the stain, but don’t over-saturate the area.

Step 2 - Blot

Place dry paper towels over the stain and set something heavy on top of it. Allow it to sit for a couple of hours.

Step 3 - Brush

Remove the paper towels and use a bristle brush to raise the carpet fibers back up.

If some of the odor remains, while the area is damp, sprinkle some baking soda onto the area and work it into the rug with the brush. After the area is dry, vacuum up the baking soda.

Cleaning Carpets

Even apart from the occasional pet accident, carpets see more traffic than virtually any other surface in the home, so cleaning them properly is key to maintaining a clean, healthy space. Here are a few essential tips for making sure your carpets are as clean as possible.

  • Vacuum your carpet a minimum of once a week,or more if you have pets
  • Once a month, use the crevice tool on your vacuum near the baseboards and tough to reach areas
  • On plush carpets, make multiple slow passes for the greatest benefit
  • Test spot cleaner in an inconspicuous place to ensure colorfastness
  • For deep cleaning, use a carpet cleaner with a rug shampoo and a rinse extractor. Once you deep clean an area, fluff the fibers against the nap to help bring the carpet back to life and to allow for more thorough drying. Make sure the room is well ventilated and avoid walking on the carpet while it is still damp.

Oriental rug repair

can prolong the life of old rugs and make them look more attractive. One of the most important areas where repair or replacement might be required is the fringe. This part actually serves as protection for the entire body of the rug. A worn out fringe can hasten the rug’s deterioration. Fortunately, there are easy ways to fix it.

Step 1 – Secure the Edges

Clamp or bind the rug fringe to secure the edges. This ensures that strands in the rug pile do not run loose as new fringe is attached.

Step 2 – Attach a New Fringe

This is the most direct way of replacing the rug fringe. You can buy new fringe and sew it on the damaged border. You do not even have to cut the old fringe away, just make sure though that you do not use glue when attaching the new fringe.

Step 3 – Weave in New Yarn

This step is applicable if you have weaving skills. Weaving in a new fringe can be difficult, but this can be the most lasting and durable fix that you can do to your rug. It will certainly look good too.
